"Ah, but Professor," Life-in-Death counters, "Is it not so that actively abusing one's environment in such a game is considered cheating?"
"Uh... No, I don't think it is," you object.
"It is now. I just house-ruled it in."
"Um, can you house-rule retroactively?" you object.
"Oh, yes. Another thing that doesn't work the same way here: time."
"Figures," Sam mutters beside you.

"Also, to form a house rulw would one not require, well, a house?"

"Would you perhaps allow for a house in the figurative sense, of a boundary-surrounded domain wherein one feels abnormally at home and within which one exercises power and control? If so, the only real 'house' I have would be this very area."

"Very Well, that is acceptable."

"In which case, I suppose the correct course of action would be to have you disqualified," Life-in-Death suggests. She says 'disqualified' with that particular inflection that comes naturally to evil people and tends to be used specifically on words such as 'removed', 'stepped out', 'tragic accident' and 'mysterious circumstances'.

"Indeed..."
I subtly prepare the device embedded in my hand which lets my sword materialise there at a moment's notice.

The Insider nods to Life-in-Death, and the two touch hands across the table.
Talhoffer suddenly finds himself somehow relocated - the table and all the various people that had been around him are gone. The growing sense of madness is back in its place. Something moves in the darkness in front of him - something that... seems to be very big, but somehow he can't see it.
Sensing someone or something behind him, Talhoffer turns and draws his sword.
Actually, he seemingly draws his card. That card he stuck up his sleeve must have got caught in the sword-producing mechanism. He quickly re-stashes the card and produces his actual sword.
The barmaid from the Neutral Territory is standing innocently behind him.
"Don't mind me," she insists. "I'm just watchin'. Things took a turn that I didn't predict, so now I'm interested to see how they turn out."

"Damn you. Couldn't you have stayed hidden and not distracted me?"

"I guess I probably could have, but that wouldn't have been much fun. Besides, I'm sure a little distraction can't be that major a drawback for someone of your attention span and history?"
